Journeys of discovery

Join us on a set itinerary, or let us create one especially for you

If the mysterious tropical rainforests of Africa's Congo Basin fascinate you, then journey with us into the untouched wilderness of the Sangha concession and Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve.

Central Africa is a vast region, spanning three countries sparsely populated with Bantu tribes and nomadic groups of pygmies, filled with a rich diversity of wild fauna and flora that includes charismatic species like gorillas and elephants.

In an effort to combine the best of the experiences we offer here at Sangha Lodge; we have created our own seven-night and 10-night itineraries for those interested in taking a step into the beyond with us and discovering the real meaning of remote!

Together with our annual set departures and our ability to create custom itineraries for small groups of friends, families and special interest groups like birders and photographers, these itineraries offer you unrivalled access to one of the continent's least explored and last great wilderness regions.

Highlights of Dzangha Sangha

Duration: 7 Nights

Day 1

The tour begins in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your charter flight and head down to Dzanga-Sangha for the first night at Sangha Lodge. If time permits we will venture out in the afternoon to explore the forest, followed by a short afternoon sundowner cruise on the Sangha River.

Day 2

This day was originally set aside for gorilla tracking, but as we have sadly had to suspend this activity for the foreseeable future due to the death of our habituated group's silverback, we will rather offer an alternative day's exploration of the rainforest and orientation of this incredible wilderness until such time as we can suitably habituate our new gorilla group.

Day 3

After a hearty breakfast, it's time to visit Dzanga Bai! This large clearing in the middle of the rainforest is where forest elephants gather in large numbers to indulge in drinking the mineral-rich waters that bubble across the clearing. The interaction between so many different groups of forest elephants is riveting and there's always the possibility of seeing some of the other normally shy forest creature like bongo, giant forest hog, red river hog, sitatunga and forest buffalos as well as exceptional birdlife.

Day 4

Enjoy breakfast overlooking the Sangha River before heading out with a group of Ba’aka net hunters as they go about their daily hunter-gatherer lifestyle. It's both fascinating and a joy in itself to see how well-adapted and comfortable the Ba’aka are in the forest. You will be shown several of their medicinal plants while the hunt goes along in the background, and the excited cheers will alert us if they do catch something. Please note that this activity is not contrived. The hunters are there to catch their food so some animals may be killed.

Day 5

Following breakfast you will head upriver by boat and hike to a series of waterfalls in the area. The hike takes you through the best examples of prime rainforest in Africa. Apart from the amazingly beautiful waterfalls, you will also see some of the most spectacular trees imaginable. Climbing to the top of the falls will provide vistas over the canopy of the forest, while the possibility of seeing the extremely rare and endangered Red-Headed Picathartes (also known as the Grey-Necked Rock Fowl) will excite any birders.

In the evening after dinner you may do a night walk near the lodge with the hope of finding some of the more elusive nocturnal animals such as potto, Thomas’s galago, tree pangolin, African palm civet, Frazer’s Eagle Owl and the Vermiculated Fishing Owl.

Day 6

It's back into the park today with picnic lunches where you will do a walk around a series of clearings in the forest. The chance of finding buffalos, elephants and several monkey species on this trek are good. You will also visit a group of habituated agile mangabey monkeys and spend some time photographing their interesting antics.

This group of habituated monkeys has more than 150 members and their fascinating behaviour is part of a long term study in the region.

Day 7

Today is a leisure day where you can either relax in and around the lodge or indulge in some optional activities, perhaps revisiting Dzanga Bai or the rainforest, or, alternatively, walking along the several trails we have laid out in the forest around the lodge. Please note that optional activities are not included in the itinerary price and will be for your own account.

Day 8

Today after breakfast you will be drive to the airstrip to take a charter back to Bangui where the itinerary ends.

* Please note that plans in this remote part of Africa remain flexible as the logistics often dictate, but the above itinerary should run closely along the schedule laid out.
